Tohoku University seeks to provide "application-oriented" research, and has been actively promoting Industry-University-Government Cooperation.

Office of Research Promotion and Intellectual Property

In 2004 Tohoku University established the Office of Research Promotion and Intellectual Property with the aim of active promotion of cooperation among industry, university, and government by assisting wide range of academic research, creation of wisdom and scientific knowledge as well as by managing, utilizing and protecting intellectual properties created at Tohoku University.

Cooperation with the Community

Tohoku University is positively making efforts to play leading roles in educational and academic activities in Tohoku District. Meeting the community's needs, it also opens its campuses and some facilities to the public and established extension courses for lifelong learning of citizens.

New Industry Creation Hatchery Center (NICHe)

The New Industry Creation Hatchery Center (NICHe) is responsible for the industrialization of research outcomes at Tohoku University. To accomplish this mission, NICHe has two functions: a research function that drives technological development activities, and a liaison function as a bridge between industry and academia. NICHe collaborates with the technology licensing office, Tohoku Technoarch Co., Ltd. which administers the commercialization of university research results based on the intellectual properties.
