The medal was awarded for his extraordinary contributions in the field of Materials Science, through the creation of many new crystals and their practical applications@by utilizing excellent crystal techniques.  He is also noted for his academic contributions, which includes the establishment of many conferences and symposiums in the field of Crystalline Growth and Crystalline Materials Development.

The gJ. Czochralski Gold Medalh was established in 1999 to honor great achievements of Prof. Jan Czochralski, who is a Polandfs representative scientist along with Marie Curie, and is also an internationally famous inventor of the crystal growth technique, the gCzochralski method.h

This award is granted to individuals for their outstanding accomplishments in gscience and technologyh and gpublic administrationh; its recipients are selected by the Foundation for Materials Science Development  which consists of people in the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Up to the present, only four researchers were awarded the gJ. Czochralski Gold Medal so far. In 2000, the Medal was awarded for its first time to Prof. Paul Siffert for his tremendous contributions to European science and technology research through the foundation of the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) in 1983, the largest academic institute for Materials.

In 2001, Prof. Kazimierz Flaga (Poland), Rector of the Cracow University of Technology, received his Medal. Then next, Prof. Walter Heywang (Germany), a former Director of Siemens Corporate Research and Development was presented his award in 2002 for great contribution in the advancement of semiconductor materials through the further development of  the gCzochralski methodh to create silicon crystals.

Prof. Boris E. Paton, President of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine received the award in 2006 and this year, Prof. Fukuda became the fifth and the first Asian recipient.

Summary of the discussion in the g2nd Polish-Japanese-German Crystal Growth Meetingh will be published in gYomiuri Shimbunh, one of Japanfs leading newspapers.
